Amazon is now offering a new membership program for customers called "Amazon Prime", which will offer a number of benefits to customers who frequently purchase items from its site. A message from the CEO explaining the program can be found on Amazon's front page today.

In a letter posted prominently on the front page of amazon.com, Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announces something entirely new for the online retailer: a paid membership program. Called "Amazon Prime," it costs US$79 per year and offers... a free shipping benefit. Specifically, free two-day shipping on any item, and overnight shipping for US$3.99 per item, with no minimum purchase amount. Amazon Prime members will be able to share the shipping benefits with up to four family members in the same household (or nearby friends, one would imagine). What else does your US$79 get you? Not a whole lot.
