Trackball to Mouse Hack
Posted by: AceBHound on Mar 26th, 2011 7:05 PM
Bought some used arcade trackballs and tried the "mouse hack" which involves sacrificing a mouse, removing its infrared horizontal and vertical optic components (infrared receiver/transmitter) and instead wiring in the vertical and horizontal phase outputs on the trackball to the micro-controller in the mouse. So as far as the computer knows it's still a mouse, but getting it's tracking information from the trackball. Operation was a success, but I have a few wires to swap around since up was down and down was up =) I might add a project page sometime, for now you can check out this link or this one. It'll be slightly different depending on the mouse you use, mine had a 4-pin optic sensor and two of the pins were for power/ground, the other two pins were the 2 horizontal phases (or 2 vertical phases on the 2nd optic sensor).
