Podcasting

I don't think I fully understood where the term "podcast" came from. Maybe I'm just dense sometimes, but I guess I find it hard to believe that a single product can spawn new nouns and verbs overnight. It reminds me of parents and grandparents everywhere referring to Sega Genesis and Playstation 1 as "Nintendo" systems. In any case, if you're still in the dark, podcasts are simply RSS 2.0 feeds with a URL and description of an mp3 file talkshow or news broadcast. The name comes from the ability for iPods to synchronize with iTunes and download these files to users' iPods. In this way, it's like Tivo for your iPod.. you always have the lastest shows to listen to on the road.

With the whole blogging scene taking off in recent years, podcasts have grown all the more popular. Anyone with an RSS aggregator can be notified instantly when a new podcast becomes available. Check out podcastalley.com to find some great podcasts or to vote for your favorites.
