Windows Longhorn Now Windows Vista
Posted by: AceBHound on Aug 2nd, 2005 2:26 PM

If you haven't been living under a rock for the last couple of weeks, you've likely heard that the newest Windows OS, formerly named Windows Longhorn has been renamed to Windows Vista. According to Slashdot, Microsoft may also soon be facing a lawsuit for trademark infringement.

What first came to mind when I heard "Windows Vista?" Hasta La Vista, of course. Upon further inspection (ie. Websters) the name change makes a little more sense. They're marketing the new OS as "Clear, Confident, Connected." The name "Longhorn" meant nothing to anyone outside of Microsoft.. the only possible literal meaning would be "long-horned beef cattle".. and they probably didn't intend to call their OS a cow.

Still, I think the best marketing they could have done would be to have Balmer dress up as a shady salesman like in his Windows 1.0 commercial.
